PEF-5 percentage earth fault protection unit from FDB ElectricalThe engineers here at FDB Electrical developed the PEF-5 Percentage Earth Fault Unit for high KA capacity installations needing a practical, cost-effective method of detecting potentially dangerous earth fault currents before damage is caused to contactors, cables or plant.

We found that zero sequence C.T.’s can be costly and difficult to install, particularly in retro-fit applications, whilst traditional types of spill current earth fault protective devices have the disadvantage of being somewhat crude in accuracy.

Therefore the PEF-5 was developed to provide an optimum solution and can be set to detect leakage currents as low as 2% of load current simply by utilising the existing protection or instrument C.T.’s.

We believe that in 98% of applications the C.T.’s used have 5 Amps secondaries and so the PEF-5 is designed to monitor the secondary current accordingly. On a 100.5 C.T. installation the PEF-5 can detect as low as 2 Amps of earth fault current which, in industrial applications, provides the capability of accurate earth leakage detection as well as earth fault protection.

In a typical application upstream fuses are installed to rupture on a short circuit between phases or between phase to earth. This is normally defined as Class C coordination and will provide the necessary protection against a short circuit between phases.

However, in the event of a short circuit to earth where continuity has deteriorated due to terminal corrosion or a loose connection, then a short to earth becomes current limited and will not “blow” the upstream fuse fast enough to prevent the contactor opening under high overcurrent trip. This can result in destruction of the contactor or at least damage to a phase contact.

In the latter case, a major problem could occur in a motor installation since current imbalance on one phase (whether or not due to an earth fault) is a linear factor of current rise and therefore measurable. However, if a contactor phase contact has been damaged due to the condition described above, then a volt drop across that contact will occur, giving rise to a voltage imbalance to the motor. Typically, for every 1% of voltage imbalance on a 3 phase motor, the effective internal current increase (not externally measurable) will be approximately 8 times as high. Thus a 3% or 4% volt drop across any phase contact can result in the total burn-out of the motor connecting to that contactor.

The PEF-5 percentage earth fault unit can be used to provide early warning of fault current as low as 2% of load current or can be set to take a motor off line immediately a dangerous earth fault occurs, thus dealing with these potential problems.

FDB2563 - multi-angle lid and door stayWe are pleased to have a new adjustable multi-angle lid and door stay – ref 24-7-3580  available in stainless steel. This is a valuable new accessory and joins our  already wide range of stainless steel enclosure and cabinet hardware fittings.

The AISI 304 stainless steel adjustable stay enables locking of a lid or door in multiple positions by use of a manually sliding lock lever. It is ideal for applications experiencing shocks or vibration in situ. It is considered suitable for commercial vehicles, off road/agricultural vehicles, railway rolling stock, also for enclosures for telecoms, commercial and street furniture and industrial equipment.

The 24-7-3580 support stay is extendable from 224mm to 350mm in 6mm pitched increments and may be installed singly either LH or RH, or in pairs. Maximum compression load is 290N.

EFR-1 RCD from FDB ElectricalThe EFR-1 is part of our wide range of low cost, high specification RCDs designed for the specialist panel builder and is ideal for general purpose, low current applications where space and economy are important considerations.

The EFR-1 is housed in a Single Module Din Rail Housing complete with integral test button and screw clamp terminals to simplify connection. It is available in 110V and 240V versions with a choice of pre-set current and time trip levels from 20mA to 500mA: instantaneous. With 60Ms and 300mS time delays also available to order. It can be connected to operate a shunt trip, UVR, or contactor coil. Flying leads for remote test facility are also available to special order.

It is supplied as standard for operation at frequencies 50/60 Hz but is also available to order at 300/400 Hz. The fully encapsulated construction provides excellent temperature stability, together with immunity against shock and vibration. Despite its compact size (only 17.5mm wide), the EFR-1 can be used with any of our remote C.T.’s with internal diameters ranging from 16mm to 250mm.

Black torpedo hinge from FDB Panel Fittings for enclosures and cabinetsWe are pleased to announce availability of our popular torpedo hinge in a “Black” version.

These torpedo-style hinges are widely used in traditional chrome plated finish for electrical cabinets and enclosures, allowing doors to be quickly mounted or removed from frames.

The new FDB “Black” version is both aesthetically pleasing and offers good corrosion resistance in normal industrial environments with the added benefit of a significant price point reduction.

The FDB “Black” torpedo hinge is manufactured in die cast zinc alloy with a 10mm stainless steel pin – rig tests have shown that two hinges on a 1m frame comfortably carried a 60kg load (equivalent to 60NM (3.43KN). IP65 compression latch from FDB Panel Fittings offers inconspicuous securityOur new IP65 PHZ 6-500 compression latch was developed to minimise attack points for prying tools – so is considered vandalism safe – while integrating seamlessly into virtually any enclosure design. It is therefore considered suitable for protection of integrated electronics and other equipment from being damaged by weather or vandalism, particularly in publicly accessible areas for enclosures of automated equipment such as advertising boards or vehicle electrical charging stations which require a secure and very inconspicuous latch.

The PHZ 6-500 features a patented planetary roller clamping mechanism which is operated using the lock key alone, but manages to offer a full 20mm closure range with 1300N force. Installation is completely within the enclosure and on larger cabinets is ideally suited to operation of a flat rod multi-point locking mechanism.

A surface mounting lock cover is available which can be colour matched to the enclosure if required.
