Bridge handles – also known as bow, grab, lift and “D” handles are a common component in industries such as mechanical engineering, sheet metal fabrication, HVAC, medical devices, food processing, rail transport and tunnelling, data centres and utilities. New Dirak stainless steel compression latches offer a secure and vibration-resistant closure for use in mechanical engineering, transport and similar applications where underfloor flaps, storage lockers etc. must endure harsh environmental conditions, and yet enable keyless operation quickly and reliably – while meeting the need for an external visual status indication.

These IP65/67 latches allow flexible use, especially in outdoor situations, which is enhanced by the fitment of a low-profile round (scalloped) knob of under 10mm height for safety and comfort. This special round knob incorporates a comfortable finger hold pattern in a 43mm dia operating knob which fits into tight spaces or other locations to minimize catching on clothing or other equipment.

Clamping of a full 6mm provides firm gasket seating for excellent protection against ingress of dirt and water or other contaminants as well as ensuring a high degree of resistance to nuisance opening in hostile conditions. A standard short-shaft, fixed length version is offered alongside the long-shaft manually adjustable option with tool-less adjustment by virtue of a knurled wheel to ensure a correct fit between the door and frame.

Soft close dampening hinges can address a common problem of nuisance closure with enclosure doors or access panels on equipment by gently supporting them while servicing internal systems takes place.

This may be an issue with strong winds in exposed places or simply holding a lid from uncontrolled closure where dampening hinges prevent the door/panel from slamming shut. These hinges provide a gentle soft closure, thus preventing damage to delicate door-mounted instrumentation or for the benefit of the engineer concerned. We are pleased to announce a new flush-mounted design of DIRAK compression rotary latch in stainless steel, with precise compression so that they are now rated to IP65 and up to IP69K – for protection from dust and water. Typically, this series is suitable for doors and panels in public places where flush mounting and vibration resistance are important e.g., rail carriages and coaches. These are situations often requiring visual indication of open/closed position – which is beneficially provided on the housing edge and the insert.

Sealing of the latch is achieved with an integral O ring that is fitted with the bevelled nut so that water or dust that collects on the installation surface cannot penetrate through the latch. A simple 90 deg. rotation is required to close the latch and a further 90 deg. rotation to achieve a full 6mm compression. A variant is also available with toolless cam depth adjustment to ensure optimum closure and gasket pull down.

It is interesting to observe that the once novel swinghandle is now the goto design for high quality cabinets – they are secure, easy to install and use, while being extra safety conscious – and available in many variants to operate rod lock systems, allow use of dual keys, include gasket compression and anti-vibration features – plus being offered in polyamide, zinc die and stainless steel to meet widely varying needs and budgets.

New DIRAK safety slam latch locks from FDB are designed and constructed to be sturdy and durable, making them especially well-suited for outdoor applications. They enable flaps or doors to be reliably locked on bicycle garages, parcel drop boxes and waste container enclosures, etc. simply by slamming them shut. But what if the door falls shut from the inside during cleaning work and the person inside has no way to get out?

To provide a remedy for this dangerous situation, new safety variants are now available within the existing range of proven product systems to enable internal unlocking in the even that a person might accidentally become shut inside the housing. By pulling on an ergonomic handle, an operator inside the enclosure can easily retract the latch bolt, so that the door or flap is unlocked from the inside. Given that the inside may well be extremely dark a persistently luminescent self-adhesive sticker is affixed to the latch body with the unlocking direction clearly visible even without light. This new slam latch with unlocking from the inside is not only designed for a wide range of applications, but is also unique in the world of latching technology.

The mechanism on these latch/locks features the possibility for two profile-cylinders and opening possible by operating a profile cylinder, independent of the second cylinder. The lock cylinder can be adjusted to accommodate different latch mounting positions. Pull back of the latch bolt is enabled by rotation of the key while closing is possible by self-locking of the latch bolt.  Internal unlocking is enabled with a single move – by pulling the large ergonomically shaped handle, the latch is easily retracted.
